The advancement towards women’s equality in Cuba is often referred to as “a revolution within the revolution. ” Indeed, women’s incorporation into the political, economic, and social life of the country wasn’t just talk. It has been state policy since the consolidation of the 1959 Cuban revolution. In 1960, the Federation of Cuban Women was created to recruit women into productive sectors of the economy like health and education while confronting entrenched notions of patriarchy.
Over the years, Cuban women have come to make up nearly half of the country’s active workforce and are highly represented in its decision-making institutions, including parliament and Cuba’s diplomatic corps.
Join us for International Women’s Day trip to Cuba to learn from and about the gains achieved by Cuban women from different sectors of society, as well as their ongoing challenges. You will have the opportunity to meet women involved in Cuban foreign policy, domestic politics, film and media production, transportation, and gender and sex education.
